Spark start charging for your Xtra email address

All Spark broadband customers can get Xtra Mail for free until 15 May 2024. From 16 May 2024, it will cost $5.95/month for Spark broadband customers, which aligns with their price for Pay Monthly mobile and Landline only customers. The price for Prepaid and non-Spark customers will increase from $5.95/month to $9.95/month.

What are the benefits and disadvantages with sticking with your @xtra.co.nz email address ?.

Advantages:
  • You wont need to notify anyone of the change of your email address like friends, family, accountants etc.
  • You wont need to update any email address logins for websites. i.e Facebook, Trademe etc.

Disadvantages:
  • The obvious disadvantage is there will be the additional fee that you will be charged for monthly.
  • You are still bound to Spark/Xtra, meaning if you ever change your Internet Service Provider, you are going to be charged more if you wish to retain your email address with Spark.
  • If you ever forget a password to log into a website and your recovery email address is still pointing towards @xtra.co.nz. The recovery options will be sent to an email address you can no longer access.

Thoughts:
For some customers the fact that you don't have to do anything like informing your friends, family and updating websites of your new email address can be one less thing to worry about.

Note that if you decide to close your @xtra.co.nz email address, you will have to manually log into your Spark Webmail and close your email account, else Spark will start automatically billing the additional email charge to your account.

The end of Windows 10 in sight

October 14, 2025

Windows 10 Home and Pro follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy. Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. The current version, 22H2, will be the final version of Windows 10, and all editions will remain in support with monthly security update releases through that date.

Some common questions will be, can I still continue to use Windows 10.

Technically, yes you can. On October the 14th, everything will remain the same except for Microsoft will no longer support the Windows 10 Platform, meaning you will no longer receive bug fixes and security updates.

This leads to the question, well why don't I just carry on using Windows 10.

This may be perfectly fine unless if you use your laptop or PC to log in to websites like online banking or other websites containing sensitive information.

If your online banking is compromised, you run the risk that the banking institution may refuse to cover your loses due to running an non-supported operating system.

What are your choices...

If your computer is less that 5-6 years old, so shouldn't have any issues upgrading from Windows 10 to the latest Windows 11 operating system. The good news is that this is also a free upgrade.

What if my computer is older than 5-6 years old ?.

Depending on how old it is, and what system checks failed when you attempted to upgrade to Windows 11, you still may be in luck.

In some instances, you may have to just upgrade your BIOS image. Sometimes you may need to change the boot from legacy to UEFI mode.

Now if the last line you just read doesn't make any sense what so ever, then we would suggest taking your computer to a computer store (Like us at Feilding Computers), and we will be able to determine whether your system is upgradable to Windows 11.

Other options may be upgrading your computer to a newer ex-lease computer that is capable of running Windows 11 - Yes we carry these in stock, or bite the bullet and purchase a new computer. Normally we can clone your older computer on to the newer computer and then perform the upgrade to Windows 11.

Good news is that we are still a couple of years away, so there is plenty of time to work on a solution.

Final thoughts..

My suggestion is that if your computer is upgradable to Windows 11, then hold off and stick with Windows 10 until it comes closer to October 2025, and if you're not so lucky, well perhaps come in and have a talk with us and we will work out a solution going forward.

Jared.

Backups are king

As they say... You don't know what you've got until you lose it.

With computers, it's not if the storage fails... It's when the storage fails.

Your storage device will inevitably fail at some stage, and when that day comes, you are going to be wanting to have your backup handy to recover your data.

Some of the critical mistakes we see that customers make is either:

a) They don't have a backup at all.

b) The backup storage device has run out of space some time ago and is no longer backing up new data.

c) They don't have much available space on the computer, so they are only using the backup device to store the information.

d) The backup storage device hasn't been checked in some time to confirm that the device is working properly.

The good news is that this can all be avoided.

A recommended method is to use Cloud Storage such as Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive or something like DropBox.

The advantages with Cloud Storage is that the files are kept off-site, meaning that if the worst happens and you have a fire, your information is kept safely in the cloud.

Most cloud storage providers offer 5-15GB of free storage space for your documents and photos etc. and if you require more storage, you can simply bump that up to something like 50gb for only a couple of dollars a month. Well worth the investment when something goes wrong.

Final thoughts...

A backup is only a backup if you have the data in more than one place.
